UK hotels on high terror alert

BRITAIN is on high alert for a Mumbai-style terrorist attack on a top hotel, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith revealed yesterday. She told MPs that security chiefs have been training staff at major hotels on how to cope with a terror hit.

Ministers, police and security services are urgently reviewing the UK’s counter-terrorism plans to beef up protection around hotels and other public buildings.

Appearing before the Commons Home Affairs committee, Ms Smith said the atrocities in Mumbai in November — which claimed nearly 200 lives — had triggered an overhaul of Britain’s “protective security arrangements”.

Obama/Bush-teams houden rampenoefening

Mike Rivero maakt ons attent op een AFP-nieuwsartikel, waarin aangekondigd wordt dat medewerkers van vertrekkend president Bush en gekozen president Obama deel zullen nemen aan een "rampenoefening."

Dit gebeurt aan de vooravond van de machtsoverdracht, op 20 januari, waarbij veel topmensen uit politiek en bedrijfsleven aanwezig zullen zijn.

"But there is no credible threat at this point to the inauguration that is precipitating this."

Rivero wijst op zijn website op de rampenoefening die werd gehouden rond de aanslagen van 9/11:

"I'm not going to go into the details of it, but it is a disaster scenario where the government would be very much tested," White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said.

Misschien, en dat valt te hopen, is het te vergezocht. Maar er is reden genoeg om dit bericht even te bewaren. Zeker met het oog op de ontwikkelingen rond Gaza, alsmede de aanhoudende herrieschopperij rond Iran.

Bommenleggers Parijs geen jihadstrijders

De Franse minister van Defensie (???) verklaarde dat degenen, die gisteren explosieven hadden achtergelaten in een warenhuis in Parijs, waarschijnlijk geen islamistische jihadstrijders zijn.

Dit wordt gebaseerd op de inhoud van een brief van de daders. Het onderzoek richt zich meer op figuren uit radicaal-antikapitalistische hoek.

In een warenhuis in Parijs zijn vijf pakketten met explosieven ontdekt. De Franse politie zegt gewaarschuwd te zijn over een aanslag door een groepering die zich het Afghaanse Revolutionaire Front noemt.

De Vlaamse terreur-dvd

Het feit dat de woordvoerder op de dvd geen nauwe medewerker is van Osama bin Laden, maakt de dreiging relatief, zegt Rudi Vranckx.

"Je hebt geen effectieve tekst. Eigenlijk is dit het soort dvd die heel makkelijk na te maken is. Het kan echt een of andere flauwe grappenmaker zijn, want je moet gewoon de juiste ondertitels erop zetten.

Belliraj: ik voorkwam aanslag in Den Haag

Abdelkader Belliraj, hoofdverdachte in een Marokkaans terreurnetwerk, zegt een aanslag op het Europol-gebouw in Den Haag te hebben voorkomen, aldus de Telegraaf.

In maart zou hij ook een aanslag in Liverpool hebben verijdeld. Belliraj, die mogelijk op de loonlijst van zowel de Belgische Staatsveiligheid als de CIA staat, werd eerder door de Marokkaanse minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Benmoussa beschuldigd van zes moorden in België.

Ook zou hij banden hebben met de Hofstadgroep. Ondertussen weet de AIVD dit keer van niets....

FRANKRIJK ZOEKT 28 KILO "GESTOLEN" SEMTEX

The NATO lunacy

To convince the allies of the looming Taliban attack, another Twin Towers like drama is being planned in which Pakistan is the villain apparent while the US-installed Afghan president is ruling the roost. He has 40,000 highly equipped US and NATO forces in addition to the US-trained Afghan army against scattered Taliban militants whose strength hardly exceeds ten thousand. Instead of fighting with them fair and square in Afghanistan, he conveniently shifts the blame onto Pakistan.
Wednesday's barbaric provocation was designed to bring to a standstill the ongoing peace negotiations between the government and tribal elders.
