Pentagon vreest aanvallen via gemodificeerde chips

Het Pentagon vreest voor chips die zo zijn gemodificeerd dat ze uiteindelijk tegen de Verenigde Staten kunnen worden gebruikt.[...]Defensie in Amerika maakt zich dusdanig zorgen over deze dreiging, dat het een speciaal onderzoeksproject is begonnen dat dergelijke spionage-chips moet opsporen. Er werken drie bedrijven mee aan het project, Raytheon, Luna Innovations, en Xradia.

Het Pentagon schijnt zich druk te maken over "backdoors." Misschien moeten ze maar eens beginnen bij hun vrienden van de NSA en Microsoft. Verder ben ik het eens met 1 van de comments onder het Webwereld-artikel: het Pentagon kennende zou er sprake kunnen zijn van "scare tactics", om de consument het privacyschendende trusted computing door de strot de duwen.

Raytheon is trouwens een grote profiteur van de internationale war on terror. Bobbie Kilberg, een Key Executive binnen Luna Innovations, had dankzij George W. Bush een adviesfunctie binnen de President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Een van de speerpunten van deze denktank:

This Panel will catalogue the numerous potential weapons of terrorists
and, for each threat, identify technologies or promising fields of
research that could yield technologies to address these threats.  The
technologies should help (1) detect potential threats in advance of their
implementation as well as assist in citizen preparedness; (2) detect and
contain an attack; and (3) mitigate the repercussions for the terrorist
action (such as the immediate grounding of all aircraft on September
11th).

Homeland Security-chef Michael Chertoff vindt bovendien de Amerikaanse wetgeving

“woefully inadequate” in the context of current technology. He said the most significant step American society needs to take is adapting laws to the 21st Century challenge of fighting terrorism. Changes in technology have created unique challenges for the government when it comes to intercepting communications, as well as collecting and analyzing information found in the public domain according to Chertoff.
