Swine Flu May Be Human Error; WHO Investigates Claim

May 13 (Bloomberg) -- The World Health Organization is investigating a claim by an Australian researcher that the swine flu virus circling the globe may have been created as a result of human error.

Adrian Gibbs, 75, who collaborated on research that led to the development of Roche Holding AG’s Tamiflu drug, said in an interview that he intends to publish a report suggesting the new strain may have accidentally evolved in eggs scientists use to grow viruses and drugmakers use to make vaccines. Gibbs said he came to his conclusion as part of an effort to trace the virus’s origins by analyzing its genetic blueprint.

Mexicaanse griep bij kind

Bij een 3-jarig kind in Nederland is Mexicaanse griep vastgesteld. Minister Ab Klink van Volksgezondheid heeft dat donderdagmorgen bekendgemaakt. Het kind is 27 april met zijn ouders teruggekomen van een familiefeest in Mexico. Het kind en zijn ouders maken het volgens de minister goed.

Gewone griep veel dodelijker dan Varkensgriep

Vandaag is het eerste slachtoffer van de Mexicaanse Varkensgriep buiten Mexico gevallen. Een twee jarig jongetje in de VS is jammerlijk aan de ziekte overleden word net bekend. Minder bekend is dat er elk jaar in de VS meer dan 36.000 mensen sterven aan de gewone griep waar wij allemaal weleens last van hebben. Experts zijn het erover eens dat de Mexicaanse Varkensgriep nog heel veel in te halen heeft wil het dat aantal kunnen overtreffen.

En die dodelijke slachtoffers dan? Ten tijde van de vogelgrieppandemie werden mensen met verkoudheidsverschijnselen zo volgestopt met chemotherapie dat het virus nog maar de minste van hun zorgen was. Die mensen gingen dood, maar aan het zogenaamde virus? Waarom zoeken grote media dit allemaal niet uit?

Klink: aangifteplicht en Tamiflu

AMSTERDAM - Medici moeten mensen die besmet zijn met de Mexicaanse griep op naam registreren. Minister Ab Klink (Volksgezondheid) heeft deze aangifteplicht woensdag aangekondigd.

Familieleden en andere omstanders van mensen die zijn besmet met het griepvirus, zullen volgens hem het preventieve medicijn Tamiflu krijgen.

Tot nu toe gold de regel dat mensen die met het virus zijn besmet, op regionaal of plaatselijk niveau worden geregistreerd. Klink heeft ervoor gekozen dat dat nu ''op naamsniveau'' moet gebeuren.

Reageerbuis met varkensgriep-virus explodeert in trein

Op maandag ontplofte er een reageerbuis met het varkensgriep-virus in een Zwitserse Intercity. Het zou om een voor mensen ongevaarlijke variant van het H1N1-virus gaan. Wel raakten twee mensen licht gewond.

WHO verhoogt alarmfase varkensgriep

Geneve - De Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie WHO heeft het alarmniveau vanwege het varkensgriepvirus verhoogd naar fase 4. De VN-organisatie sluit niet uit dat het virus kan uitgroeien tot een pandemie. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat de varkensgriep van mens tot mens kan worden overgebracht en hele gemeenschappen kan infecteren. Alarmfase 6 is de hoogste fase, die betekent dat een pandemie, ofwel een wereldwijde epidemie, een feit is.

Is there any hard evidence of laboratory origins?

As of this moment, I have not personally seen any conclusive evidence of laboratory origins for this H1N1 swine flu. I am open to the possibility that new evidence may emerge in this direction, however, and I am suspicious of the genetic makeup of the virus as one possible indicator of its origins.

I am not a medical specialist in the area of infectious disease, but I have studied microbiology, genetics and a considerable amount of material on pandemics. What seems suspicious to me is the hybrid origin of the viral fragments found in H1N1 influenza. According to reports in the mainstream media (which has no reason to lie about this particular detail), this strain of influenza contains viral code fragments from:

• Human influenza
• Bird Flu from North America
• Swine flu from Europe
• Swine flu from Asia

This is rather astonishing to realize, because for this to have been a natural combination of viral fragments, it means an infected bird from North America would have had to infect pigs in Europe, then be re-infected by those some pigs with an unlikely cross-species mutation that allowed the bird to carry it again, then that bird would have had to fly to Asia and infected pigs there, and those Asian pigs then mutated the virus once again (while preserving the European swine and bird flu elements) to become human transmittable, and then a human would have had to catch that virus from the Asian pigs -- in Mexico! -- and spread it to others. (This isn't the only explanation of how it could have happened, but it is one scenario that gives you an idea of the complexity of such a thing happening).

Now, on a common sense level, what is the likelihood of such a combination of seemingly unlikely, trans-continental events taking place? At first glance, without the benefit of additional laboratory analysis, it seems extremely unlikely that this could have happened "naturally," without human intervention. It's not outside the realm of possibility, of course, but it seems exceedingly remote that such events happened without some human encouragement.

Authorities distributed vaccines among all the medical personnel with no results, because two of my partners who worked in this hospital (interns) were killed by this new virus in less than six days even though they were vaccinated as all of us were. The official number of deaths is 20, nevertheless, the true number of victims are more than 200. I understand that we must avoid to panic, but telling the truth it might be better now to prevent and avoid more deaths.

Venture capital firm set to reap rewards on swine flu

LOS ANGELES, April 24 (Reuters) - The swine flu outbreak is likely to benefit one of the most prolific and successful venture capital firms in the United States: Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Thomson Reuters Private Equity Week reported on Friday.

Shares of the two public companies in the firm's portfolio of eight Pandemic and Bio Defense companies -- BioCryst Pharmaceuticals (BCRX.O) and Novavax (NVAX.O) -- jumped Friday on news that the swine flu killed a reported 60 people in Mexico and has infected people in the United States.

The World Health Organization said the virus appears to be susceptible to Roche's (ROG.VX) flu drug Tamiflu, also known as oseltamivir, but not to older flu drugs such as amantadine.
