Destabilizing Pakistan, America Plays with Fire
The fact is, most Pakistanis believe religion is a private matter and should be separate from the public sphere. But that doesn't inhibit the TTP and other jihadist outfits from imposing their sectarian will by force and now, with the complicity of the state.
While the Western media portray the country as a hot-bed of fundamentalist extremism, the Taliban-linked parties were shown the door in the 2008 national elections, installing "secular" parties busily negotiating their rights away. Closely associated with the venal Musharraf regime, the five-party alliance, the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), which had garnered some 15% of the vote in 2002 and controlled the NWFP government suffered a devastating loss. As socialist critic and historian Tariq Ali wrote on the deadly embrace of Pakistani elites and their American neocolonial partners,
Back in the heart of Pakistan the most difficult and explosive issue remains social and economic inequality. This is not unrelated to the increase in the number of madrassas. If there were a half-decent state education system, poor families might not feel the need to hand over a son or kdaughter to the clerics in the hope that at least one child will be clothed, fed, and educated. Were there even the semblance of a health care system, many would be saved from illnesses contracted as a result of fatigue and poverty. No government since 1947 has done much to reduce inequality. ...
I spent my last day in Karachi with fishermen in a village near Korangi Creek. The government has signed away the mangroves where shellfish and lobsters flourish, and land is being reclaimed to build Diamond City, Sugar City, and other monstrosities on the Gulf model. The fishermen had been campaigning against these encroachments, but with little success. "We need a tsunami," one of them half joked. We talked about their living conditions. "All we dream of is schools for our children, medicines and clinics in our villages, clean water and electricity in our homes," one woman said. "Is that too much to ask for?" Nobody even mentioned religion. (The Duel: Pakistan on the Flight Path of American Power, New York: Scribner, 2008, p. 27)

Melamine may be in US food supply
In China, ANYTHING made with Chinese-manufactured milk powder before September 14th was PULLED from their store shelves.
In the US, this garbage is still being sold!
Foods at risk: ANY food manufactured in China and potentially any food containing milk powder. US food manufacturers imported millions of pounds of milk powder from China before September 14th. The FDA continues to allow to be sold.
This includes chocolate, cookies, cakes, and even things like packaged macaroni and cheese.

U.S. official issues a blunt warning on security pact
The chairman, Admiral Mike Mullen, also pointedly accused Iran of working to undermine efforts to negotiate and approve a status of forces deal.
Speaking to reporters in Riga, Latvia, Mullen said he respected the need for Iraqis to engage in "a healthy debate" over important issues of sovereignty, such as the Dec. 31 expiration date of the UN Security Council Resolution authorizing the American-led military effort.
"But we are clearly running out of time" he warned. He said he was "increasingly concerned" about the sharp public criticisms within Iraq of the proposed text.
Indeed, his remarks came amid reports that the Iraqi cabinet had decided Tuesday to ask the United States for unspecified changes in the draft security pact that would allow U.S. troops to remain in Iraq for another three years.

Turkey Pulls Out of Deal to Buy Iranian Gas Under Pressure From US
Signing the £1.87bn agreement to provide Turkey with Iranian natural gas - on which memoranda of understanding had already been agreed - was to have been the crowning achievement of Ahmadinejad's two-day visit to Istanbul, which Turkish officials had agreed to after intense Iranian lobbying. Iran is Turkey's second-biggest energy supplier after Russia and has been seeking to woo Turkish investment in its South Pars gas fields.
But as Ahmadinejad met his Turkish counterpart, Abdullah Gül, at Ciragan Palace in Istanbul, it emerged that US intervention had effectively torpedoed a deal.

Published: Friday, February 22, 2008
Canada and the U.S. have signed an agreement that paves the way for the militaries from either nation to send troops across each other's borders during an emergency, but some are questioning why the Harper government has kept silent on the deal.
Neither the Canadian government nor the Canadian Forces announced the new agreement, which was signed Feb. 14 in Texas. Bron

Pakistan beschuldigt VS van steun aan terrorisme
Harde bewijzen

Turkish newspaper reveals Maliki’s wait-game
Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyat [via alriyadh] revealed why Maliki is playing a time game and why the Kurds want to sign the agreement as soon as possible:Iraqi government asked both Turkey and Iran to provide written guarantees on security cooperation with Iraq, in exchange for abandoning the security agreement the U.S.
The newspaper uncovered, that Baghdad is waiting for answers from Tehran and Ankara, and will cancel the whole idea of the agreement in case Iran and Turkey provide such guarantees.
This actually means that US military presence would no longer be necessary. If it ever was. It also means that a US/Israeli attack on Iran would become virtually impossible, without upsetting Nato-partner Turkey, and without sparking a major new wave of violence and political instability in Iraq.
Let's just hope no 'incident' will happen in the near future, to prevent this deal from happening.
