Speelt de economische crisis de Europese Unie uit elkaar?

Hier en daar wordt al gevreesd voor IJslandse scenario’s: een zware economische en financiële crisis, en een lidstaat waar de overheid niet meer de middelen heeft om ze onder controle te houden.

In de herfst is de Europese Unie overigens reeds een lidstaat te hulp moeten schieten. In Hongarije liep de financiële crisis zo uit de hand te lopen dat de overheid zelf financieel over de kop dreigde te gaan. Dank zij het ingrijpen van het IMF en de Europese Centrale Bank werd de toestand er voorlopig gestabiliseerd. Maar binnen de eurozone mogen lidstaten niet tussenkomen in elkaar tekorten! De Europese verdragen verbieden dat. Men begrijpt dat Brussel er niet gerust op is wanneer Tv-beelden van rellen in Griekenland of het Spaanse Zaragossa binnenlopen.

Regering IJsland gevallen

(Novum/AP) - De president van IJsland heeft de centrumlinkse Sociaal-Democratische Alliantie gevraagd samen met de oppositiepartij Links-Groen een interim-minderheidsregering te vormen.

Maandag kwam de regering van premier Geir Haarde, een coalitie van Haarde's Onafhankelijkheidspartij en de sociaaldemocraten, ten val. Na weken van luidruchtig protest tegen de manier waarop hij de economische crisis tegemoet trad diende Haarde maandag zijn ontslag in. Nadat de IJslandse banken vorig jaar waren bezweken onder een schuldenlast die zich in een periode van ongekende hausse had opgehoopt, schoten inflatie en werkloosheid omhoog. Het Internationaal Monetair Fonds voorspelt voor 2009 een inkrimping van de IJslandse economie met tien procent.

Letland protesteert tegen EU en IMF

In Letland werd vandaag stevig gedemonstreerd tegen de slechte economische situatie en tegen de rechtse regering, die het land uit wil verkopen aan EU en IMF (Internationaal Monetair Fonds.) Nu ben ik geen voorstander van geweld bij demonstraties.

Maar financiële hulp van dit soort internationale financiële instituties heeft altijd een prijs, die betaald wordt door degenen die doorgaans het minst profiteren.

The excuse for bypassing normal legislative procedures was the existence of an emergency. But one of the most reprehensible features of the legislation, that it allowed Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to permit bailed-out institutions to use public money for exorbitant salaries and bonuses, was inserted by Paulson after the immediate crisis had passed.

Rex 84: FEMA's Blueprint for Martial Law in America

We are dangerously close to a situation where ~ if the American people took to the streets in righteous indignation or if there were another 9/11 ~ a mechanism for martial law could be quickly implemented and carried out under REX 84.

The Cheney/Bush administration has a plan which would accommodate the detention of large numbers of American citizens during times of emergency.

The plan is called REX 84, short for Readiness Exercise 1984. Through Rex-84 an undisclosed number of concentration camps were set in operation throughout the United States, for internment of dissidents and others potentially harmful to the state.

The Rex 84 Program was originally established on the reasoning that if a "mass exodus" of illegal aliens crossed the Mexican/US border, they would be quickly rounded up and detained in detention centers by FEMA.

Existence of the Rex 84 plan was first revealed during the Iran-Contra Hearings in 1987, and subsequently reported by the Miami Herald on July 5, 1987

Eerste echte kredietrellen in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong kwam het vandaag tot rellen, als gevolg van de kredietcrisis. Veel mensen verdringen zich om hun geld van de bank te halen, en er is veel verontwaardiging over verliezen als gevolg van het omvallen van Lehman. De Hang Seng-index verloor overigens 8% aan waarde.
