One would think that Iraqi farmers, now prospering under "freedom" and "democracy," would be able to plant the seeds of their choosing, but that choice, under little-known Order 81, would be illegal.

But first, it is important to set the context. Most people have never heard of the infamous "100 Orders," but they help explain why the majority of Iraqis remain opposed to foreign occupation. The 100 Orders allow multinational corporations to basically privatize an entire nation, and this degree of foreign and private control has not been witnessed since the days of the British East India Company and its extraterritoriality treaties.

Gewonden bij rellen over Kosovo

Bij de Amerikaanse ambassade in de Servische hoofdstad Belgrado zijn zondagavond rellen uitgebroken. Een paar honderd jongeren kwamen in botsing met de politie.

Ze protesteerden tegen de gebeurtenissen in Kosovo. Het Kosovaarse parlement riep de onafhankelijkheid uit en Amerika is één van de westerse landen die bereid zijn de nieuwe staat te erkennen.

Bij de rellen voor de Amerikaanse ambassade in Belgrado zijn zeker achttien gewonden gevallen, onder wie enkele politiemannen.

On the Hill some call it being McKinney'd--the treatment Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney received when she was in Congress. Twice, rather than protecting the incumbent, the Democrats put up well funded challengers against her. Now, it looks like Dennis Kucinich may be facing the same treatment in Cleveland.

There is a report circulating the web that before the Nevada primary Kucinich was visited by representatives of Nancy Pelosi and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the right wing Israeli lobby. They told him that if he would drop his campaigns to impeach Cheney and Bush, they would guarantee his re-election to the House of Representatives. Kucinich threw them out of his office.

Kucinich has aggressively challenged the Democratic Party leadership in Congress and on the presidential campaign trail on the issues of war, civil liberties, impeachment and big business control of government. He's even refused to pledge to endorse the party's presidential nominee.

Bush: Grotere aanslagen dreigen

WASHINGTON - Terroristen bereiden nieuwe acties voor in de Verenigde Staten die de aanslagen van 11 september 2001 zullen doen verbleken.

Dat heeft de Amerikaanse president George Bush gisteren gezegd.

Bush poogt met zijn opmerking het Huis van Afgevaardigden onder druk te zetten om in te stemmen met nieuwe regels voor het afluisteren van terreurverdachten. De Senaat heeft een voorstel aangenomen dat telecombedrijven, die de autoriteiten zonder toestemming van een rechtbank helpen bij het afluisteren van telefoongesprekken en het bekijken van e-mails, vrijwaart van vervolging.

De regering-Bush kwam eerder in opspraak door, zonder gerechtelijke toestemming te vragen, telefoongesprekken en e-mails van terreurverdachten af te tappen. Maar om achter de plannen te komen van de vijand is de samenwerking van telecombedrijven onontbeerlijk, zei Bush.

NAVO wil als eerste atoomwapens gebruiken

Het westen moet zich klaarmaken voor het uitvoeren van een preventieve atoomaanval, ‘om een halt toe te roepen aan de «imminente verspreiding» van kernwapens en andere massavernietigingswapens’, aldus is te lezen in het manifest «voor een nieuwe NAVO» dat werd opgesteld door vijf hoge NAVO functionarissen, waaronder de voormalige Nederlandse stafchef generaal Henk van den Breemen.

Nou is het mij niet duidelijk in hoeverre deze doctrine ook daadwerkelijk doorgedrongen is in de NAVO-top, maar dat het idee alleen al geopperd wordt maakt me misselijk, vooral bij het idee dat er in Washington zeker wel haviken rondlopen die dit maar wat graag zouden doordrukken.

Hallooo! First strike nuclear option...? Eén van meerdere goede redenen voor bijvoorbeeld de SP om gewoon weer botweg en duidelijk "Nederland uit de Navo" na te streven.

US, Israel refuse to cooperate with inquest into Syria strike

UN nuclear watchdog has no evidence Syria had nuclear facility

The International Atomic Energy Agency - the United Nations nuclear watchdog - has not been able to conduct an investigation into the events surrounding the Sept. 6 Israeli bombing of a Syrian military installation because neither the Bush administration nor Israel are cooperating.

A diplomatic source close to the Vienna based IAEA told Raw Story that both the United States and Israel have been approached by the organization requesting supporting evidence of a nuclear reactor which media sources have cited, based on anonymous sources in both governments, as the reason for the Israeli strike.

Afghanistan: Vrede voor Pijpleidingen

Met het zenden van twee extra pelotons Nederlandse troepen naar de Afghaanse provincie Uruzgan, lijkt de Nederlandse regering voor een deel te buigen voor druk vanuit de Verenigde Staten en met name de NATO om vooral mee te blijven doen aan de ISAF-missie in Afghanistan. Het transatlantische bondgenootschap is al enige tijd naarstig op zoek naar versterkingen, maar met 2007 als het meest bloedige jaar sinds de Amerikaanse invasie van 2001, staan niet-participerende lidstaten niet bepaald in de rij om een aandeel te leveren. Maar Nederland dus nog wel. En dat terwijl de oorlog door verschillende partijen allang voor verloren is verklaard: militair onwinbaar en ondertussen uitgegroeid tot een van de grootste humanitaire rampen van dit moment. De enige echte oplossing voor het conflict lijkt een vrede met de opstandelingen en de Taliban. Na ruggespraak met zijn broodheren in Washington blijkt de Afghaanse stadhouder Karzai inderdaad toestemming te hebben gekregen om de Taliban weer een politieke rol te geven in het land. En de Amerikanen hebben haast. Niet omdat de “opbouwmissie“ een compleet fiasco is geworden; er moet juist gebouwd worden. Alleen geen scholen of ziekenhuizen. Olie-en gaspijpleidingen om precies te zijn.

Neocons Told to Look for Reasons to Attack Iran

British newspaper the Sunday Telegraph claims that Members of the US secretariat in the UN have been asked to "search for things that Iran has done wrong", in order to justify military strikes against the country

Many observers claim the exercise is reminiscent of attempts by Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld to build the case for war with Iraq and expect it to boost support for an attack on Iran inside and outside the administration.

Concern is also being expressed in the CIA and the Pentagon that the US Administration exaggerated intelligence which was used as a basis for an Israeli air attack on Syria last month.

Report: Cheney may have mulled pushing Israel to hit Iran

Newsweek Magazine reported Sunday that Vice President Richard Cheney may have considered a plan for Israeli missile strikes against an Iranian nuclear site in an effort to draw a military response from Iran, which could in turn spark a U.S. offensive against targets in the Islamic Republic.

Citing two unnamed sources the magazine called knowledgeable, the magazine quoted David Wurmser, until last month Cheney's Middle East advisor, as having told a small group of people that "Cheney had been mulling the idea of pushing for limited Israeli missile strikes against the Iranian nuclear site at Natanz - and perhaps other sites - in order to provoke Tehran into lashing out."

According to the report, "The Iranian reaction would then give Washington a pretext to launch strikes against military and nuclear targets in Iran."

Het zal dan ook niemand verbazen als binnenkort de Iraakse regering zijn woede waarschijnlijk zal moeten inslikken en onder druk van de Amerikanen het contract met Blackwater toch weer zal moeten verlengen.

Het omstreden beveiligingsbedrijf Blackwater is vandaag weer aan het werk gegaan in Irak. Premier al-Maliki heeft daartegen geprotesteerd bij de VS.

Ze staan in feite boven de wet, omdat de VS immuniteit verleent.
